Becoming a sister

The path to becoming a Sister of Providence involves several stages of formation. Through various information and vocational facilitation activities, we journey with you in a personalized manner, while you deepen your reflection and listen, in your heart, to what God is saying to you.

Come and See!

This stage involves a search for your vocation. As an aspirant, you are accompanied by a Sister of Providence, discover the community and her spirituality, and take part in activities with sisters.

Pre-novitiate

As a pre-novice, you come to live with the Sisters of Providence, experience community life, and pursue your human and Christian formation. You continue to verify your vocational calling, your aptitude for religious life and your ability to embody compassion. This stage generally lasts 6 months to 2 years, depending on the individual’s journey.

Novitiate

As a novice, you follow a holistic two-year formation. During the first, or “canonical,” year, you integrate the meaning of the vows in order to live them. You are introduced to theology, and receive formation on the history, spirituality and mission of the Congregation. During the second, or “apostolic,” year, you develop your ability to live the community life and mission of the Sisters of Providence.

Temporary Vows

You become a Sister of Providence by taking your temporary vows of chastity, poverty and obedience. These vows are renewed each year over a maximum nine-year period until you take your perpetual vows. You continue your discernment by engaging in ministry. You may also continue your studies and are encouraged to live an experience in a cultural context different from your own.

Perpetual Vows

Lastly, you take perpetual vows, promising to remain committed for the rest of your life.

My religious life story began in 2007, when I was 17 years old. The Sisters of Providence visited my village, and this opportunity allowed me to live out my dream of becoming a sister, leaving my family home and discovering my calling to embark on a one-way journey like Mother Bernarda Morin.
